From the Green And the Blue

On June 5 2011, everyone from everywhere unites to celebrate a global event – World Environment Day. The theme for this year – ‘Forests – Nature At Your Service’ will mark the 39th celebration of this colourful event which began in 1972. Countries from all over the world participate in World Environment Day by taking part in many activities that contribute to the betterment of nature.

Kuramathi, being an island blessed with luxuriant vegetation and pledged to eco-friendly practices partakes in this vibrant occasion by planning a ‘green program’ for the day. Following the theme for this year, a tree planting session to protect the shoreline against erosion is to be held. A nature walk around the island highlighting the Banyan Trees, Nature Trail and Botanic Walk is planned for the day as well, followed by a demonstration of coconut plucking, and you will also get it to sample it! For our little guests, an exciting game is scheduled, where they are instructed to count the number of Banyan Trees on the island combined with an “Ice, Water” game.

In the evening, a short nature film will be aired on the beach near the Sand Bar with an exciting twist i.e. – A special Environment Day Cocktail!

On this special occasion, Kuramathi is also getting ready to make a solemn pledge: for every tree we have to cut down, we will plant another in its place. If you are going to be with us during this time, please do join us in our efforts to promote environmental awareness.

Nearly 70% of our body is made up of water. What is the total amount of water on the Earth? The answer – Estimated 326 million cubic miles of water.

Indeed, on June 8, 2011 the world marks the importance of water by celebrating the World’s Ocean Day. People around the planet celebrate and honour the body of water which links us all, for what provides to humans and what it represents.

Kuramathi celebrates this global event by planning a special program for the day. If you are a certified diver, join us in the afternoon as we clean up our house reef. The fun yet strenuous activity will be followed with fresh coconuts on the beach!

A thrilling twist is brought to this day as we launch our first underwater photography competition, open for all our guests! Guests are asked to submit their underwater masterpieces from 1st to 8th June. Special Prizes are rewarded to the top 3 candidates for their artistic efforts. Images submitted shall be reviewed by the voting panel (guests and team members) and the top 3 images get their well rewarded yet valuable prizes. The winning photos will also be displayed at the Eco Centre with photo credits, of course!
